Turkey roast in December? Sounds un-Australian to me!
While all the American movies show us the same old decadent Turkey feast, in Australia we love a laid-back Christmas. And what is more Australian than a Christmas spent outdoors?
If you haven’t embraced a backyard Christmas yet, maybe this is the year to start a new Christmas tradition!
Last week we looked at updating your outdoor seating for Christmas events – making sure you have enough chairs, a more traditional table setting for serving food as well as comfortable lounging options as well. If you are well set up in your outdoor area, there is nothing stopping you from creating a great Australian Christmas Miracle – a wholesome feast that isn’t fussy and actually suits the Australian palate in summer.
Hot weather is great for more relaxed gatherings – and nothing is more relaxed than eating outdoors. Gather family and friends, a few drinks and put on a buffet-style meal that allows everyone to sit around enjoying the summer sunshine (or hiding in the shade!). Make sure you check out our range of umbrellas in store to create the shade if you need it!
Now relaxed does not have to mean sausages on the barbecue! Today’s version of the barbecue allows us to cook beautiful marinated roasts which are perfect served with a variety of salads. This is a great way to combine some of the traditional meal items with more summery fare. Otherwise, there is nothing more Australian than throwing some seafood on the barbie. Prawns, salmon… the choices are endless. Even some beautiful chicken skewers make an appropriately Christmassy treat –especially if you embrace lots of red and green capsicum!
To finish up – how about a Christmas pavlova? A tropical fruit salad is always a favourite… or if you are more daring, make your own ice-cream! What better way to finish up a perfect Australian summer day!
While food brings us all together, your outdoor furniture is the hero of the party. If you have a traditional dining setting, you can all sit around and eat and share what you are grateful for this Christmas, and let the kids run around in the back yard or if you are lucky enough, swim in the pool. If you have a more lounge-based setting – well all the better for lying back after you have all filled your bellies!
